When designing a bathroom, it’s crucial to think it through all the way to completion. Essentially, you want a fully envisioned design to present to your contractor, making sure every detail is laid out. The more specifics the contractor has before installations, the better the final product will turn out. If all the materials are chosen and reflected in the design, your contractor can adjust the space to best suit the finished look.
- Shower Head Height:
Since the 1950s, we’ve made significant strides in proper shower plumbing layouts. For starters, we’ve learned that the average male height in the United States is around 5 feet 9 inches. If you live in an older home, you might find yourself either accepting showers at shoulder height or bending awkwardly to get your hair wet. Nowadays, we’re installing shower heads at a minimum height of 84 inches, space permitting.
The traditional placement of a shower valve right under the shower head often leads to an unfortunate surprise shower, especially if there’s a glass door blocking your swift retreat. We recommend positioning the shower valve in a spot that’s easily accessible while keeping you dry—outside the shower, across from the shower head, or wherever it makes sense. These decisions should be made while the walls are still open. Knowing your shower layout at the start will help you find the perfect solution.
2. Plastered Walls:
Let’s reconsider the need for tiles in the bathroom. Do you ever think about how much you despise dirty grout and how hard it is to clean? Dreaming of clean, minimalist walls or maybe something more bold? Tiles aren’t your only option! You can achieve the same waterproofing and longevity with plastered walls. Using age-old techniques like Tadelakt, lime plaster, or other water-resistant plasters and sealers can deliver results you never thought possible. Plastered walls offer elegance, consistency, and durability.
3. Curbless Showers:
Removing the shower curb has some fantastic benefits. Firstly, it creates a more spacious look by not dividing the bathroom floor into sections. Secondly, it makes entering and exiting the shower smoother, potentially making the space handicap accessible and increasing its value. However, ditching the curb requires careful planning to prevent water from spreading all over. Ensure the sub-frame of the shower area is lower than the rest of the bathroom—or better yet, the entire bathroom is lower than adjacent rooms. This setup allows for a recessed shower pan and proper slope. Also, consider installing a secondary drain as a backup in case the main drain gets clogged.
4. Wall-Mounted Fixtures:
Wall-mounted fixtures are all the rage. The more, the merrier—from sink faucets to toilets, shower benches, and vanity cabinets. These fixtures show off more of the surfaces beneath, making the space look cleaner, bigger, and more organized. Plus, they make cleaning a breeze and offer more design possibilities, like hidden drains beneath floating benches or toilets, adding a touch of sophistication and mystery to your bathroom!
5. Built-In Glass:
For those who crave clean lines and minimalism, consider installing your glass panel into an embedded channel to eliminate the need for glass clips. This sleek detail is as beautiful as it is sophisticated.
6. Built-In Storage:
Opt for a medicine cabinet that integrates seamlessly into the room. Whether mirrored or not, recessing the cabinet into the wall frame makes the final product look much more elegant.
7. Mud-In Fan Cover:
Spending lots of effort making everything nice and elegant, only to have the fan cover ruin it? Check out a mud-in fan ring. You can thank us later!
8. Stone Vanity:
Bathrooms are notorious for being humid, especially if you’re a fan of hot showers. Many store-bought vanity materials won’t withstand the test of time, as they often contain particle board that swells with moisture. Consider a stone vanity that’s not only beautiful but also durable.
9. Privacy Glass with a View:
Privacy glass that looks like a mirror from the outside lets you enjoy your beautiful view without worrying about neighbors enjoying a view of you showering. This technology is a stylish upgrade from traditional frosted glass, especially if your bathroom offers a view worth savoring.
10. Ceiling Mounted Mirrors:
Struggling to decide between a window or a mirror above the vanity? Why not both? A mirror suspended in front of a window can look stunning and offer the best of both worlds—natural light and reflection. It’s a bold move, but who says you can’t have it all?
